The Law Firm Now Known As Hupy and Abraham, S.C. Has A Long And Colorful History
We Trace The Roots Of Our Law Firm To Attorney Lloyd Barbee Who Started The Milwaukee Public School Integration Lawsuit

A Message From Attorney Michael F. Hupy:
When a law firm is founded, established or what it traces its roots to, is not always an easy determination to make.
I was in high school in the mid 60’s when this law firm was founded. For some time, I was under the impression that this firm was founded in 1969. When I joined this law firm in 1989, it was already well established. Later someone asked me how I could be sure that this law firm started in 1969 when I hadn’t graduated from law school until 1972.
I took this question as a challenge and did some research. As it turned out, I had understated the firm’s age by at least five years.
Below is a copy of a memo that was circulated to firm employees in April of 1989, announcing the celebration of Arlene Johnson’s 25 th anniversary with this law firm. She retired after thirty-three years of service with this firm in 1997, when the firm was known as Michael F. Hupy & Associates, S.C. The firm is now known as Hupy and Abraham, S.C.

Over the years the firm has had several different partners and has been known by several different names. As I traced the roots and origin of this firm I was helped by several people and numerous documents I found in the firm’s business records.
When I joined the law firm in 1989, one of the founders was still at this firm and when he left in 1997, I bought that original owner's share in the firm and became sole shareholder. Attorney Jason F. Abraham became a shareholder in 1999 and the name of the firm became known as Hupy and Abraham, S.C. on January 1, 2006.
There are eight law firms in Milwaukee employing hundreds of lawyers, which trace their origins, back more than one hundred years. When one law firm’s claim of a one hundred fifty year history didn’t add up in my opinion, I questioned it and the firm retreated from its one hundred and fifty year old claim and reduced its claimed age to one hundred fifteen years.
The oldest law firm in Wisconsin is Foley & Lardner, LLP, which claims to have been established over one hundred sixty-five years ago. The very prominent Milwaukee law firm of Borgelt Powell, Peterson & Frauen, S.C. traces its roots back one hundred twenty-six years. In 2006, it commemorated its one hundred twenty-five year status by adding information on its letterhead and envelope stating that it was founded in 1881. In one hundred twenty-six years, Borgelt, Powell, Peterson & Frauen, S.C. also had various partners and firm names. Shown below is a copy of the firm’s letterhead as it has been used since 2006.
I am going to share with you on our website just some of the numerous documents, pleadings filed in court and letters that helped me come to an opinion as to the founding of our law firm. I want to personally thank those who have authored letters and provided documents used in my interesting research of this law firm’s history.
